IPL Intense Pulsed Light

IPL light pulse therapy – evens out skin tone, reduces pigmentation and vascular changes, and stimulates collagen production.

IPL is an effective light-based treatment used to address surface blood vessels, hyperpigmentation, skin rejuvenation and acne.
It is a powerful method for brightening and evening out the skin tone.
The treatment can be performed on the face, neck, décolletage and, for example, the backs of the hands.

General

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is an advanced non-invasive treatment that uses controlled pulses of visible light to target a range of common skin concerns. This refined technology helps restore a more even, naturally radiant complexion.

IPL is highly effective in treating vascular concerns such as broken capillaries and rosacea. The treatment directs controlled pulses of light precisely to the affected areas, where the energy is absorbed and triggers the skin’s natural repair response. Gradually, this reduces the visibility of these concerns, helping the skin appear clearer, brighter and more even in tone.
In addition to its pigmentation-correcting benefits, IPL also supports collagen production. By stimulating collagen, IPL helps rejuvenate and firm the skin, softening the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and other signs of ageing. This dual action not only enhances the skin’s overall appearance but also contributes to long-term skin health and vitality.

FAQ's

Is IPL an effective treatment?

IPL is an effective way to treat a range of skin concerns, including redness, rosacea, visible blood vessels, freckles, acne, hyperpigmentation and unwanted hair. Most clients see good results with minimal side effects, but IPL is not suitable for everyone.

Will I see results after just one IPL treatment for acne?

IPL does not usually produce immediate results for acne. In some cases, acne may temporarily worsen after the first session. A course of 4–6 treatments, spaced around four weeks apart, is typically recommended.

How many sessions are recommended for hyperpigmentation?

A treatment course of approximately six months is recommended. Patience is important – sun-induced pigmentation develops over many years, and it takes time for the skin to recover.

What happens during the treatment?

A handheld device is guided over the skin, delivering broad-spectrum pulses of light into the deeper layers. The wavelengths are absorbed by melanin and haemoglobin in the skin. IPL also gently warms the deeper tissues, stimulating collagen production, which helps soften fine lines, wrinkles and acne scars. Unlike lasers, IPL uses multiple wavelengths of pulsed light, allowing several concerns to be treated at once.

What happens after an IPL session?

Freckles and pigmentation may appear darker for 3–7 days after treatment – this is normal. In rare cases, bruising may occur and typically resolves within a week. Recovery time is usually minimal, but some precautions are needed. The skin becomes sensitive and may feel similar to mild sunburn.

Who is not suitable for the treatment?

IPL is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Treatment is not recommended if you are very photosensitive, recently tanned from the sun, solarium or self-tanning products, or if your skin tone is naturally dark or deeper. Active herpes is also a reason to postpone treatment. The treatment is not suitable if you are using a retinoid cream. If you are taking any medication, please check with your practitioner beforehand, as some medicines can increase photosensitivity.

Before the treatment

Avoid self-tanning products for at least two weeks before your appointment. Treatment cannot be carried out on very tanned or sunburned skin.
The treatment area must be intact with no open wounds.
Active herpes in the area means the treatment cannot be carried out.
If you are taking any medication, please contact your practitioner in advance, as some medicines can increase photosensitivity.
We do not perform this treatment during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or for clients with epilepsy.

After your treatment

Sun exposure and IPL do not mix. After treatment, your skin is highly sensitive to UV light for approximately 4–6 weeks. It can burn easily, and sunburn can become severe quickly.
Cleanse the skin daily with a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser. We can recommend products to nourish and soothe the skin as it heals.
Avoid harsh skincare products such as exfoliants, scrubs, fragranced soaps or creams, brightening products, astringents and retinol for at least seven days.
Your skin will also be very sensitive to heat. Avoid hot baths and showers; only wash the treated area with cool or lukewarm water for the first 2–3 days.
And remember daily SPF.
